A solid potato salad is easier to make than you think. If your’e a purist, a traditional potato salad starts with potatoes, eggs, and dressing; it’s as simple as that. You might not want to mess around with something that is a classic, but the possibilities are endless when it comes to making your own signature potato salad. What do you do? Where do you start? Simple, establish that key flavour profile you’re going for and then add in elements that will compliment your main ingredients.

Maple Leaf Canadian Craft Montreal Style Smoked Meat Wieners
For this potato salad recipe I had the chance to try out and use Maple Leaf Canadian Craft Montreal-style Smoked Meat Wieners. The Canadian Craft line of products were created inspired by different regions of Canada using pork sourced exclusively from Canadian farmers.

Montreal is known for our smoked meat. I was excited to develop a signature potato salad recipe that would highlight the distinct flavours and celebrate this popular Montreal delicacy. With ingredients like dill pickle and mustard, you might think you’re eating an actual smoked meat sandwich. So don’t be that guy who brings pizza or a bucket of fried chicken to your next summer pot-luck and use this recipe to wow your friends and family.

2. After 5 minutes add wieners to the simmering potatoes and cook for another 5 minutes. Drain and allow to cool.

Grilling the potatoes adds a great smokiness to the dish and it highlights the flavour of the wieners. This was my first time trying the product. I tried a slice of the “Montreal-style Smoked Meat Wieners” on its own and it really tasted like smoked meat, but it was a bit unsettling. It was the texture that threw me off (duh because it’s a hot dog and not actually smoked meat.)

My mind was saying sweet delicious smoked meat, but my mouth was saying HOT DOG. Regardless of what my senses were saying, we were all in agreement that these wieners were delicious.

With the addition of dill pickles and caraway seeds tossed in a dressing with a hint of mustard, this dish tasted like a classic Montreal smoked meat sandwich… but just as a potato salad!
