A Cocktail For Any Occasion – SAQ Espace Cocktail

What’s synonymous with hockey nights at home? Take out! But more specifically PIZZA! The most common and most popular in the takeout/delivery food group, I must admit, pizza has found its way to my dinner table on many a hockey nights in Montreal. I was recently contacted by the SAQ and was asked to find the perfect cocktail to pair with this perfect delivery food.

My pizza delivery of choice and one of the best pizzas in the city is Pendeli’s Pizza. Purists, haters and even the naive will argue that to the end; this spot that his been around ever since I can remember. Famous for their long strips of pepperoni, the Pendelis special is an all dressed pizza with the addition of onions, olives, anchovies and bacon. Fluffy and chewy, their crust is one of a kind that’s the perfect base for their generous heap of toppings. Pendelis is also one of the few places that keep the tradition of the doughball in the middle of a delivery pizza alive.

When I have people over to watch the game – whether it be the guys or the guys and their ladies, or even if I’m enjoying the game alone, I’d love to say I have the time and patience to prepare single serving cocktails and tend my coffee table bar, but I don’t. I’ve checked out the cocktail section of the SAQ website for quite and simple cocktail ideas.

The Espace cocktail section isn’t just a site for cocktail recipes, but a great resource for the home bar and living room mixologist as well. From education on types of alcohol used in mixed drinks, to suggested ingredient and garnish pairings to even a “trending spirits” section which feature different awesome spirits and specialty cocktail recipes that include them every month, the site is an overall, all-encompassing support system of all things boozy.

No one ever said ordering pizza is lo-brow, nor should it only be enjoyed with the typical case of beer on moving day. I like my pizza (and most meals) with something fizzy that I can enjoy just as much as my favourite pizza. What’s great about the Espace Cocktail page of the SAQ that it’s a variable cocktail concierge, you can pick the ingredients you want to use – or have on hand – and it will give you a list of drinks you can make.

Being broken down into three families, cocktail spirits are categorized into bases, liqueurs and creams, which when combined with your favourite mixers (soft drinks, fruit juices, etc.) the recipe possibilities of classic or even unique one of a kind mixed drinks are endless.

I have this go to cocktail that I’ve prepared for many dinners, family barbecues and romantic dinners with my lady. I was looking to pep it up a little bit and by using the SAQ’s Espace Cocktail page, I was able to bring my mixed-drink game up a level by adding a few variations to my signature cocktail that’s pretty versatile and is quite successful regardless of what you have in your fridge or what you’re eating.

Jason’s Lychee Punch

Serves: 6-8 glasses
Fruity and bubble go-to cocktail for dinner parties and BBQs.
  • 250 ml (8 oz.) Lychee liqueur
  • 1 litre (32 oz.) Lemon-lime soda
  • 120 ml (4 oz.) Orange juice
  • 120 ml (4 oz.) Cranberry juice
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Ice cubes
  • Mint
  • Slices of limes
  1. Combine all ingredients in a pitcher except mint.
  2. Mix with a wooden spoon
  3. Serve in a glass, garnish with mint leaves and lime slices.
  4. Remain sexy
